Got an itch for money? Scratch smarter, not harder

Nov 25

The itch you can’t ignore

You’ve got a money itch. Despite your success, you can’t shake the feeling—you should have way more left in your bank at the end of the month.

So you scratch it. You download another budgeting app. You create a color-coded spreadsheet that would make a CFO weep. 😢 This time, you’ll finally get it right.

Feels productive. It feels like control. For a minute.

But the itch comes back. ALWAYS.

You’re scratching in the wrong spot

The advisors, the systems, the spreadsheets? They’re just bandages. They cover the symptom, but they don’t heal the wound. They are just the what.

And oh, do we love a good what. It’s tangible. It’s a to-do list we can check off.

But the real work? The actual, honest-to-goodness transformation? It’s in the why.

Mirror, mirror… on your bank statement

Your finances are a mirror. They reflect your stories. Your beliefs. The patterns you learned so long ago you don’t even remember learning them.

Maybe you grew up hearing “money doesn’t grow on trees.” So you hoard it, terrified it will all disappear, even when you’re earning more than enough.

Or maybe you saw money used as a tool for love and affection. So you spend it lavishly on others, hoping to earn your place.

These stories come from everywhere. Your parents. Your first boss. That one snarky comment from a friend while splitting a restaurant bill back in 2006. They are the ghosts in your financial psyche.

No spreadsheet can exorcise those ghosts. No app can rewrite those deep-seated narratives.

The big plot twist: It’s not about the numbers

The real itch isn’t your spending habits. It’s the story driving your spending. The real problem isn’t the number in your bank account. It’s the belief that dictates what that number means about you.

So, try this instead…

What if you stopped fixating on the numbers for a week?

What if, instead, you got curious?

  • What’s your first memory of money?
  • How did your family talk about it? Or did they?
  • What does having money make you feel? Safe? 🤗 Guilty? 😳 Powerful?! 💪

This is the real work (sorry, no app for that)

It’s messier than a spreadsheet. Way less predictable than an algorithm.

But guess what? It’s the only thing that will actually, finally, truly satisfy that money itch.

When you understand your why? The what mostly takes care of itself. The numbers stop bossing you around. They just become… numbers.

And you become free.

Now go scratch THAT itch.
