Stop Saying You’re Too Busy for Your Finances (Because You’re Not)

May 16

We’re all drowning in life.

Work, kids, surprise PTA meetings, aging parents, and a to-do list that doesn’t ever shrink.

But when you say, “I don’t have time for my finances,” doesn’t that sound a bit… off? I mean, it’s your money we’re talking about here. It’s kind of a big deal.

No, I’m not telling you to become some spreadsheet wizard who spends hours planning every penny. That’s totally overkill. What I’m saying is this: carving out even a couple of hours a month for your finances is a no-brainer. And yes, you’ve got that time. You just don’t realize it yet.

We all waste time. Yes, even you, Busy McBusypants. 👖🌪️

Here are three ways you might be flushing precious minutes down the drain and how to redirect those minutes towards finally tackling your finances.

1. Stop Wasting Your Nights and Start Winning Your Mornings 🛏️⏰

Do you know the real key to waking up early? Going to bed at a reasonable hour (or drinking two tall glasses of water just before you hit the sack). 💦🥱

Most of us drag ourselves through the day, proclaiming we’re “so busy,” only to spend our nights scrolling social or obsessively Googling “Why is my dog acting weird?”

Here’s the harsh truth you need to hear: Your next morning’s success starts the night before.

Want to start waking up just 30 minutes earlier? Shut down the screens, skip the late-night snacking, and get yourself to bed at a decent hour. Then, when your alarm goes off, you actually stand a chance of feeling rested instead of wanting to lob your phone across the room.

This quiet morning time? Magic, I promise. No screaming kids. No dinging emails. No distractions. It’s just you, your coffee, and that glorious silence. Use it to glance at your budget, plan your upcoming expenses, or pay a bill or two. Even once or twice a month, this ritual could be a game-changer.

2. You’re (Constantly) Distracted by Stuff That Doesn’t Matter 🛍️⚽📺

Distractions are everywhere. Social media, online shopping, sports updates, your weekly plunge down the rabbit hole of Amazon reviews for stuff you don’t need. Been there. Done all of it.

Here’s the deal though: Every time you scroll, click, or obsess over your fantasy baseball league stats, you’re losing time you could spend on stuff that actually matters. Yeah, I’m calling you out.

Companies spend billions of dollars on marketing mind games to hook you onto their products. Guess what? Your time is the collateral damage. Same goes for endlessly shopping for the “perfect” self heating mug online or keeping up with your favorite sports team like it’s your full-time job.

How about this instead? Slice out just 30 minutes from your scrolling, your shopping, or your sports madness and dedicate it to planning your finances. Your fantasy football league 🏈 will survive without you obsessively refreshing stats for half an hour. Prioritizing your money? Now that’s life-altering.

3. Stop Talking (About Nothing) and Start Doing 🗣️🙄

Look, chatting is great. Humans are wired to connect, and shooting the breeze can be fun. But have you noticed how much time you spend in conversations that are… well, meaningless? Half the time, you’re not even that into it.

“Oh, did you see that weather report?” “Yeah, crazy rain last week!” Cue awkward laugh.

Here’s the thing. I’m not saying you need to stop being social altogether. This isn’t an “official invitation to hermit-land.” What I am saying is, maybe trim back the fluff conversations. Shave even 10-15 minutes off that endless Slack-chat or post-meeting “chatter about nothing,” and redirect it.

Instead of small talk, try small action steps. Use those minutes to check that your credit card payment cleared, balance your account, or even just look at where your money is going. Small changes, big impact.

The Tough-Love Reality Check 👊💰

The “too busy for finances” excuse doesn’t hold water. We all waste time. The key is figuring out where that wasted time is hiding and redirecting just a little bit of it toward financial health. It’s not glamorous, but it’s necessary.

🕵️ Take stock of your time.
⚡ Identify your time-wasting culprits.
📅 Block off a couple of hours a month for your finances (yes, just a couple!).

You don’t need to overhaul your life. No need to “build a new you” or eat kale chips while journaling about gratitude. (Unless that’s your thing?) Just start small and aim to be consistent.

Your finances affect everything. They impact your family, your stress levels, and your future freedom. And honestly, when you look at it that way, doesn’t it deserve at least a little slice of your time?

So stop saying, “I don’t have the time.” You do. You’re just using it on the wrong stuff. Go on, give your finances the attention they deserve. Your financial future will thank you.
